Mountaintop

We celebrate distance as a summit -
release potential embrace
for a future moment to create

Letting go of anxiety, absence
envelopes Us, our fetal dreams
gestating,  fluidly forming;

the curvature of their spines
unfurling in gelatinous forests
of vesseled bone and pulp

Calcifiying cartilage into stems
they extend the furrowed depth -
their pods now fodder for earth

From ashes to ashes, dust to dust
we depart to return, alternating choice
until our roots are terra firma

Yesterday we turned too-soon left
today, too-late right . . .
tomorrow, dead-straight ahead

toward millenniums of Love and Life;

Sometimes it isn't wrong to ask Death
to kindly stop for tea and scones;
Shall you have one lump or two?

It gifts its sickle as a walking stick:
a means to reach that mountaintop
