Nothing

Nothing comes from nothing,
or so they'd have you think.
Just sign right here, and all your fears
will vanish in a wink.
And did they neglect to mention
the way they came to power?
Like breaking toes, and crushing foes,
while taking what was ours?

So while we marched to the chamber,
I cut the cord, and ran.
Now I find I left behind
what they now call a man.
And so they use it as ballast,
to see our brothers sink.
But as I've decreed, some men are freed
by rusty broken links.

Just to become the prey of progress,
free-range cattle, and governed waste.
If you were born in the days of progress,
they wonder how you taste.

I've hid out in the open
for far too long.
Was pulled back in to the pit of sin,
where the undertow is strong.
Still, there's more light in my shadow,
than the rainbow that they walk.
Don't fight the wave, 'cause freeing slaves
will only get you mocked

by those you're trying to save,
and though it may seem hard,
'ya gotta let 'em down, gotta let 'em drown,
until they drop their guard.
And if you've still got it in you
to share what's left of hope,
If you're not walled-off, you best haul off
and throw that guy a rope...

Just to become the prey of progress,
free-range cattle, and governed waste.
If you were born in the days of progress,
they wonder how you taste.
