You chose me

You chose me?
Knowing my wrong and my secret.
You chose me.
You took my hand, touching without regret.

You knew my name
My age
My thoughts.
Do you know how many demons had hold on me?
A lot.

You chose me?
Does it not matter that I am a woman?
We are looked down on
Yet you call me “chosen”

You became my friend
My brother
Teacher.
I can’t forget your face
Every line, every feature.

I saw you lift a dead man and return him to his mother
Do I fear you? Yes.
I will never fear another.

I was confused
Hurt
Conflicted.
When I saw a cross
With my best friend lifted
Up with thieves, nails in hands.
This can’t be right.
This is not the plan!

He chased away my demons
Is his not the son of God?!
Call your angels quickly!
Or are you a fraud?

No.

You chose me.
I’ve looked into our eyes
You chose me
I just... didn’t think you’d die.

Again I’m confused,
I came with spices and perfume
I didn’t find you there
All I found was an empty tomb.

Those men said you live
Risen from the dead
Could they be wrong?
Were they mislead?

You chose me.
Crying, scared, alone.
You found me in the garden
How have you always known
The deepest parts of me?
Is this divine love?
Could it possibly be?

I did not know your face
Blinded by fear and pain
But it was clear in an instant
When you spoke my name.

You chose me.
Through my doubt and disbelief
You chose me
Oh wonderful relief!
That I don’t have to pay
For the lies
The treachery and loss
That was MY death you nailed to the cross.

You chose me.
Marry, sinful wretch.

You chose me.

Now after what you went through
Is it my turn?
I want to choose you.

Author's Note
Mary Magdalene is one of my favorite women from history. The Bible says that Jesus cast out 7 demons from her. I can’t imagine the pain that 7 demons could bring. She was the first person recorded to have seen Jesus risen from the dead. I would love to know what her thoughts were that day.
