renga – water lights

1
walls colored sunset
eyes shining, gifts they gave us
four bird songs linger

2
sea reflecting cloud
words on pages sign their names
I'was* cry return

3
water lights drifting
glimpsing those outlined in stars
cranes against the moon

*("I'wa" is the Hawaiian name for the Frigate Bird, a large sea bird that cannot land on water - the sailors would follow them to dry land and the harbor of their return)

Every memorial day on Ala Moana beach on Oahu, in a buddhist ceremony, laterns are set adrift to honor those who have passed - I wrote for our parents. - Dolly and Franz, Ginny and David. Their latern will drift on Monday, the 28th.
