Identity

And hey, maybe you’re like Jamie
With that mega-watt smile
And always flicking hair out your face
Because though you complain
You love everything all the same.
And maybe that’s you,
In the photographs with the silly faces
And a life blazing out of the paper
And burning up the world;
Maybe that’s you, who’ll never be lost
Because you’re always there
With your shiny teeth
And your sparkling eyes
And that makes you beautiful though maybe
Maybe what you are is a little less perfect
And in the dark you’re a different person.

And then maybe you’re like Sarah:
Sedate and slow
And your world’s no whirlwind.
You’re happy with your slow-mouth rivers
And your babbling creeks
And life is no more demanding
Than you would ever let it be.
Step on the road, you’re the pavement,
You travel slower and you watch the world spin by
And you’re happy like that.
You’ll never be lost because you can’t fall free
And you’ll always be there, with your little smile
And you’re Jamie’s background
While she’s your power.

And then maybe you’re like me,
Sitting on the windowsill in the half-light
Watching the winter snowball fight
And wondering what the world wants from me
And whether there’s a ghost that hovers
Between Jamie and Sarah
And maybe her name is mine.
