Phantom Heart
I’ll pretend you can hear me
But it’s no good
Because I know you can’t
You’ve already moved on, checked out
You’re just a shadow mimicking the motions
Swimming long and deep in my oceans
Of words
You’re just a phantom heart
That I can put away or place where I want
But I know when we’re face to face
There’s bound to be a wild one
A wild heart, a wild moment, a wild start
Before you tuck it away again
Away so deep and so far
From your body parts
I’ll sing a song for you
But it’s no good
Because I know you can’t make out the words
You’ve already shifted from one mode to the other
You’re just an empty threat hovering above
Breathing long and deep in my love
Of music
You’re just a phantom heart
That I can put on or take off as I please
But I know when we’re face to face
There’s bound to be a wild one
A wild heart, a wild moment, a wild tease
Before you rip it from its seams
And fling it far and wide
From your spare parts
I can go on believing you can feel me
But it’s no good
Because I know you can’t reach as far as I
You’ve already picked up and dusted off your gun
You’re just a shell ready to fire
Reaching long and deep into my soul’s collection
Of art
You’re just a phantom heart
That I can’t bear to hide away, I’d rather keep you close
But I know when we’re face to face
There’s bound to be a wild one
A wild heart, a wild moment, a wild cry
Before you slam it to the ground
And grind the pieces into the dirt
From where you stand
From where I stand
