The Dog Days of Summer

I received a flyer in the mail
Announcing a rabies clinic in the local area
The flyer listed the schedule of dates and locations
Below the schedule was a simple request
“Please have dogs on a leash
And cats in a pillow case or carrier”
I don’t have anything against cats,
But I am a ‘dog person’
So, I did giggle about the cat
In the pillow case
However, after my initial mirth
I thought it was about as classy
As a rat with a gold tooth
The morning of the clinic rolled around
The dogs were all excited when we loaded up
Thinking they were going to the dog park
Life is all about managing expectations
But I’m not sure how you do that with a dog
I kept telling them, “rabies shot”
But all they heard was, “dog park”
We arrived at the gravel parking lot
Across from the old high school
It was covered with vehicles
Locals with their pets
My dogs on leashes exited the truck
Wolf just happy to be there,
Pete barking up a storm
Like my aunt at a family reunion
First, letting everyone know she’s here
Then, proceeding to tell them all her problems
Both dogs got a quick shot in the scruff of the neck
Then loaded back up and we drove home
They didn’t seem too disappointed
Maybe we’ll go to the dog park soon,
But I don’t want to tell the dogs just yet
Until I know for sure; I guess you could say,
I’m not quite ready to let the cat out of the bag
