My friend! I didn’t expect this to hit me between the eyes on first read...
Oh yes, perfectly expressed!

Thank you Jade! I did worry that it may be too obtuse to meet its mark. I'm glad you were able to feel its full weight on the first read.

Thank you LadyRain! I hesitated qualifying hopes and dreams as perishable but frankly they can perish when subjected to so much despair and opposition. I am glad this poem touched you.

Re. CUSTOMS: A poem in cinquain
If you are of a mind that all humankind were created equal,
regardless, (PERIOD).
That each is entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,
then you were a true American, even before your arrival,
and we, who believe likewise, welcome you.
For those of you who live here now yet, do not feel this way,
I would also welcome your deportation to any other country
that will have you. May God have mercy on their souls.
All others, need not apply.
Such a wonderful piece.

Teri, you sincerely touched me with this statement. I have never considered the Declaration of Independence in this wise way:
"That each is entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,
then you were a true American, even before your arrival," Beautiful!
