Not of Worth but Value

Witness to the mindless
in determined pace
ignoring as an obstacle
Marie, out of place

Perceiving hesitation
each step retraced
pausing to request
aid if embraced

Her eyes fearful
reluctant approach
as if assistance
would somehow encroach

I found Marie lost
amidst frozen streets
yet against howling winds
her delicate voice competes

Location of home
not ascertained
“I'm sure it is this way.”
confidence feigned

Walking together
her frail hand now in mine
“You must have somewhere to be.”
I simply decline

As we ventured
an unconfirmed route
Marie became steady
stride resolute

She responded in stories
to questions posed
recalling in detail
beautifully composed

As she recounted
times long since passed
I’ll see her home safely
my resolve steadfast

After our good-byes
she softly heeded
please let her know
if ever I needed

Now if in reading
praise falls unto me
kindly reconsider
this tale differently

It is I who was blessed
and honoured that day
to gain respect of Sister Marie
who had but lost her way

Author's Note
I met Sister Marie walking to the underground after my last day of a training in London. Truly inspiring and beautiful woman. Have no doubt that I felt blessed.
