Harvest
One hundred million years ago or perhaps it was tomorrow
A farmers plow had struck the earth and found that it was hollow
Something from outside of time had fallen to scorch his farm
But what he saw the very next day had caused him great alarm
Somehow, someway this rock from space had dealt his land no harm
When just last night he saw something shot from a distant star
And hit the earth in the center of his giant field of corn
In the morning when he went out to reap what he had sown
He found that where the meteor struck, something else had grown
A patch of corn was growing but their colors were unknown
In just one night the earth had grown and covered the impact zone
Like a thin veil covering a deep and gaping wound
This brittle ground had grown so fast and hid the foreign hole
As if it was to deceive him from what was hidden down below
And when the farmer had broken through this patch of dead fake earth
What was below revealed to him a stark confusing truth
The meteor was melting like an ice cube on a hearth
Becoming an unknown liquid substance pulsating with growth
Not knowing what to do or think he'd ride into the village
To inform the police and the scholars at the college
For if it continued to seep into the ground then it would damage
All the crops and plants that he was planning for the harvest
After burning the oddly glowing corn he was to leave
He had to destroy the tainted crops so no one else would see
And take away from him the land he worked so hard to keep
Nine generations of family blood resided on this plot
He made the tenth, his son eleventh to live chained to this spot
His wife was in the village eight months pregnant with the tot
He couldn't help but wonder now if all was well or not
For just a few short days ago his wife awoke in pain
Screaming to the heavens that her child should be saved
God should take her and not her son to rest in an early grave
Was it a dream, maybe something unseen?
He couldn't comprehend
just how a mind so calm and fine could one day suddenly bend
It seemed the loving caring woman he married was now dead
Never knowing her mind was rotting as she slept in her bed
Fearing for his child's life he rode into the town
But having been past the witching hour, no one was around
The village was too quiet and he couldn't hear a sound
He was too scared and not prepared for what it was he found
Because in the square, just growing, there was something in the ground
It was like a luminescence but an essence in a presence
Like lighting with a conscious had a child with a garden
For when he looked upon it the light vanished in an instant
Leaving nothing but a plant growing alone in innocence
Afraid, he went back to his horse
To ride alone straight to the doc's house
Wondering if this was the best course
Fearing for the life of his spouse
The doc awoke to the sound of his cries
Screaming that his wife was gonna die
So the doctor grabbed his bag and ran outside
And was greeted by a pair of terrified eyes
All he asked was that the doctor try
to save his wife and the child inside
So they rode as fast as they could
What did they find in the middle of the road?
His wife was laying naked wrapped in a coat
Screaming and choking and clawing at her throat
The farmer knew but the doctor didn't seeThat something was inside his wife's body
Something more surreal than just a baby
She was being impaled by the branch of a tree
The branch was inside her body it seemed
And it was glowing like the flower he'd seen in the street
But strangely this was days before his farm
Was hit by the rock from outside of time
Could this be a warning or maybe an alarm?
That the presence was created inside his mind
It happened hundreds of years ago or maybe it was today
A man whose life lay in the land had somehow gone astray
His only son was born in death his wife she went insane
There had to be a harvest or his land they'd take away
His families farm and the crops it bore his only saving grace
But something he could not forsee
Was that nature couldn't hear his plea
And sent a drought long hot and mean
To starve his crops and kill his dream
So woe be unto those that try
To think of time as a straight line
We look real hard but we can't find
When life is lost or left behind
Can truth be told within a lie?
This farmer created his own way
To cope with a life that was in decay
When all he loved was taken away
Tomorrow, yesterday, today
A fractured timelines sad display
Of how he dealt with his destiny's pain
The moral should be plain to see
Are nightmares real if we believe?
And see them when we're not asleep
The apple falls far from the tree
We put them all in one basket
What if the basket is cracked and bent?
The apples fall there's nothing left
Or what if we do not suspect
The outside's nice, inside it's dead
Just like the farmer who did pretend
If real or not; the end's the end!
