what are the odds of driving 3 miles to and 3 miles back to buy a powerball lotery ticket and winning versus being in a fatal car crash?

i am glad you asked. the odds of winning the jackpot are about one in two hundred million.

over a lifetime, about 1 out of 100 of us will die in a car accident.
if we live 100 years or 1200 monthes,
and we drive 1000 miles a month,
that makes 1,200,000 miles driven in a lifetime. so that many miles at a risk of 1/100,
so 120,000,000 miles per fatal incident.
our six mile round trip to buy a lottery ticket,
120,000,000. /6 =20,000,000 or one in twenty million is your risk to drive to the store and buy a lottery ticket.
compared to 250 million to one to win.

so for every powerball winner out there, about 11 others died trying to the store.
