your breath hitches

you glance everywhere
anxiety kicks in
bam! the door opens
relief settles in

I can relate to anxiety and the relief of it.
Do you want the impact of the "bam!" to stand alone for impact or be quickly relieved by the ending of anxiety? If the latter, I think you should indent after the exclamation mark.
