excellent words, I certainly know the feeling - note pad at bedside for me, dawn chorus comes so soon.

Sorry I didn't acknowledge yer comment, Anon: I was unaware of its existence. 'Twas only when a second comment transpired yesterday that I noticed the first one!  So, ya keep a note-pad next to yer bed: is that to jot things down before sleep? Or incase ya wake up with a jottable thought? Or both?  It sounds like ya know the feeling of sometimes being a slave to the pen, yeah? I must say: it often fascinates me how easily ones compunction to write can render Time into abeyance. To paraphrase a famous proverb: Dawn hath no meaning to a writer on a train of thought.

. . in which case, Dave, yer obviously well acquainted with that first cheep of the day. In view of which, ya may relate to how the above poem transpired: I was writing another poem a few years back; a longer one which took about a month to complete. During which time, I was sat one night at my desk beavering away for hours with the pen . . when I heard the first cheep. And I thought: "How can that be? It's only 2 or 3am". So I looked round at the window, and saw the faintest glint of light peeping over the top of the curtains. Looked further round to the clock; 'twas 5:30! And I just sat there for a few minutes marvelling at how many hours can rapidly elapse when one's on a train of thought . . and the above words just started to enter my head. It only took about half an hour to complete the piece (I like to refer to it as a 'live' poem.. 'cos I wrote it as it was happening).

Do ya ever write in the day, Dave; or only at night?
