Ugly Colors

regret
mistakes  
rubbing dirt into my eyes  
painted my spirit with ugly colors  
   
lost time  
poor choices  
stuffing my ears with mud  
painted my spirit with ugly colors  
   
rotten fruits  
thorny paths
rolling in swamps of filth  
painted my spirit with ugly colors  
   
ruined  
tainted  
can't be cleansed  
permanently impure  
   
scrubbing hard  
smearing the mess  
with the mold from my sponge  
and the sweat dripping from my face  
   
more ugly drops  
on my stained soul  
of the darkness I gathered  
and covered with unwashed hands  
 
trying to rinse the muck from my hair  
to wash out the mud from my ears  
brush off the dirt from my eyes  
I choose a new palette  
   
I'll cover the pain-filled picture  
paint over every blemish  
on this canvas of me  
abused as it's been  
   
misplaced splotches  
still show through layers  
only making the new colors    
seem all the more beautiful and bright
