CHOCOLATE
Dry mouth as the cocoa
Baking on banana leaves
The burden of a cloudless sky
On air sweet as sugar cane
Beans crushed
Water from the wadi
Pound to paste
Don't waste these alien pods
They'll burn a fire
And the brown boot man
Will give a day
To tend the plot of rice
And he will stay
With the blank eyed girls
Their hands as rough
As this viper grass
The split discarded husks
Born in this field
Die in this field eager for heaven
Birthday aged eight
Cutter and bucket
Were his only gifts
As this writer
Ate chocolate cake
Baking on banana leaves
The burden of a cloudless sky
On air sweet as sugar cane
Beans crushed
Water from the wadi
Pound to paste
Don't waste these alien pods
They'll burn a fire
And the brown boot man
Will give a day
To tend the plot of rice
And he will stay
With the blank eyed girls
Their hands as rough
As this viper grass
The split discarded husks
Born in this field
Die in this field eager for heaven
Birthday aged eight
Cutter and bucket
Were his only gifts
As this writer
Ate chocolate cake

Whale such a deep write we do indeed take for granted what we have in this life and how some toil for a living at such a young age for us to have these luxuries..
soul food kind of ink..

WOW! You beat me to it lol ... I just watched a fascination news piece on the destruction of the banana 🍌 as we know it. There are historically so many increbile geopolitical implications, including abject poverty, with the harvesting of "common" goods that we forget about in our daily routines ... Nike has nothing on the banana and cocoa industries ...
Brilliant! work

there's always a bit of heaven in hell
on the chocolate - not much luck John - hardly anyone who grows cocoa has ever tasted it

Suddenly I have
a sweet tooth;)
but, to your poem ...
if only life had been
as delectably sweet
to the one working it ...
excellent observation, Whale

I have always been obsessed with chocolate....self-serving gratification....over-indulgence for the sake of comfort / reward. My only thoughts were in regards to price vs.attainability--not really considering the personal plights of all those workers who initially make the supply(even) possible.
With this piece, you have given me an entirely new perception of the 'guilt' in my pleasure....and this is only as it should be.
Thank you for the enlightenment, my friend.

Sublime with it's simplicity and wisdom. This moved me and the experience ironed a few wrinkles out of a difficult day. Namaste
