Sad Clown

(sonnet)
The rolling wheel implies his certain fall;
Three balls that ever cross prepared to drop.
His sad clown practice by the big cat's stall.
For foolery, her nervous pacings stopped.

She was the star in black and yellow fur,
And he a hobo tramp with painted frown.
She held the center ring in spotlights’ blur,
And he, the greasepaint troop of slapstick clowns.

The smiling clown who wore a frown’s pretend,
He first with extra balls would fascinate,
Then clubs and hoops and cycle’s seat extend.
And she with catly songs appreciate,

For she alone he gave his greatest shows,
So that his star was one she only knows.
