The Fear In The Fade
"Outside, daylight was bleeding slowly toward dusk.”
― Stephen King
Ask yourself who wields the knife
while blood drains from sorrowful sky
the weight of earth turns ever darker
as purple fades to pale
tree tops burn as a last gasp candle
looming after luminance, twisted and ominous
bearing vigil with hoot and claw
a low sigh sifts from ghostly willow
white-moth and fire-fly twist amble bat
shrieks herd un-furl brave men to inside
light the torches stoke the fires
mist to moor comes crawling
hewn hills hide a cause-way to black
fields that glow gold sullen flat
I watch the green blades woe
unto night
asking myself who wields the knife

The imagery is beautiful, creating an image of night-time wonderland tinged with danger. The last line ties the story together beautifully. The sorrowful contemplation of night...

Souls,
they tend to wield a knife.
Perhaps it is something
we're trying to sever,
permanently,
from ourselves?
an Excellent & Darkened observation
as well as interpretation..

AHHhhh.....Eventide...Twilight...the soothing...serene....enticing....healing...haunting.....bewitching...beautiful interval between the Lite and the Darkness--welcomed and dreaded by so many....
My friend, your striking, vivid imagery captures the darker, more dreaded aspects of this time....as viewed perfectly through the eyes of someone who fears the inevitable nite-fall...and the Darkness--perhaps both externally, and internally.
I think Stephen King himself would take note of this piece....and the poetic irony of the quote that you used for inspiration! It is from "The Running Man"....and i couldn't help but wonder if the poet/narrator believes we should be more afraid of ourselves....and running away more, from the Darkness within....
Thank you for sharing your Darker side with us!

As Always DE You Are Quite Astute!!! Forever self analyzing- as that saying goes- "I am my own worst critic" Sometimes even in quick-spit I get the need to shake the shit Outtah myself and slap the face a few ;) My Dear Poetess - You need to post more- such a graceful Pen You Wield- fine wines Are savoured- but I drink it regularly ;) Be good to Yourself!!!

Soul, the haunting imagery in this piece is vivid and felt as if I am there experiencing the terror of such a nightfall. I also recalled images from "The Hound Of The Baskervilles." And the ageless question is compelling and fraught with endless speculation. Bravo!

We slice the dusk that dawn be born. Beautiful imagery, Soul. It's a wondrous thing when the sun lights the crowns of trees.
