Look I can walk
How nice
Did you know that
your third cousin
once removed
could walk and read Shakespeare
when he was just 10 months old?
Look I can ride my bike
How nice
did you know that
an old schoolmate of mine
won the Tour de France
when he was just 5 years old?
Listen I can play “Mary had a Little Lamb”
How nice
Did you know that
the granddaughter of a lady
at church
played Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No 3
with the Vienna Philharmonic
when she was just 71/2 years old
Look I graduated high school
How nice
Did you know that
the son of
a lady I met in the
grocery checkout line
graduated from Harvard
When he was just 14 years old?
Look I graduated college
How nice
Did you know that
this man I met
up at the lake
well his son’s best friend
got his doctorate in Physics
when she was just 17 years old?
Look I won the Nobel Prize for Literature
How nice
did you know that
our neighbor down the street, Jim
well the daughter of his cousin’s
great nephew
won six of those
In one year
that’s right she swept all categories
when she was just 25 years old?
Wow...that’s great
So how are the kids?
They’re just fine

I don't understand why it's SO difficult for some people to congratulate/compliment a person's accomplishments. If they would, their entire life would turn around for the positive. Some people are so jealous and competitive it hurts to see someone else making a difference in their own lives.
Best thing to do is cut them out of your life.

Ahavati, thank you for reading my ridiculous piece. I got very tired of this sort of behavior over the holidays so I had to vent. When it happens so frequently with certain individuals it becomes pure comedy. I tried to illustrate just how far some will go, vis-à-vis complete strangers, to compete.

So many trot out their accomplishments in an effort to impress. For some that's the whole idea, surpassing everyone they meet, going into boring detail about their illustrious careers and gifted brats. This is sharply observed and very funny Gahdess. Excellent write!

Amen to that. They're more than likely comparing themselves to others all the time. The Rachmaninoff passage was written especially for you 'cause I knew that you understand the great complexity and difficulty of playing that piece. I am thrilled to read your comment and to once again nourish myself with your poetry.

Thank you so much. Unfortunately the negative muse for this piece is firmly entrenched in my life.
It is a very long quote, but the words of Bobby Kennedy, at the University of Kansas, March 18, 1968, popped up in my head. Kennedy basically said that you can brag about high brow achievements and such, but they"measure everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile."
