Looking For A Future
She stands on the verandah
And stares into the distance with a wistful look in her eyes
As though she needs to be somewhere else
Though she knows not where
But will know it when she sees it there in the distant waves of heat
I wonder where her mind takes her
That sad look in her eyes
And the way her shoulders roll down in defeat
But when she turns to face me she is herself again
Fully here with me
With happiness in her face
And her breasts pushed out proudly
I know that one day she will no longer be on the verandah at all
Gone into that wispy distance
To meet whatever fate she thinks will meet her there
But for now I will hold her hand
And guide her to our room
And make love
While I still can
Happy to have her on this stopover in her life
And fully knowing that a stopover is what it is
And stares into the distance with a wistful look in her eyes
As though she needs to be somewhere else
Though she knows not where
But will know it when she sees it there in the distant waves of heat
I wonder where her mind takes her
That sad look in her eyes
And the way her shoulders roll down in defeat
But when she turns to face me she is herself again
Fully here with me
With happiness in her face
And her breasts pushed out proudly
I know that one day she will no longer be on the verandah at all
Gone into that wispy distance
To meet whatever fate she thinks will meet her there
But for now I will hold her hand
And guide her to our room
And make love
While I still can
Happy to have her on this stopover in her life
And fully knowing that a stopover is what it is
