Night Visitor

I lay my head down, and he visits me. He’s shadowless, he has this… glow. It’s the only light in my world of thought. But lately, it’s been dim. When I ask him about it, he claims he’s fine. He used to dance around, drawing and capturing the hearts and minds of even the darkest creatures. Now, I notice, as his light dims, it flickers. In those bright moments in between, he’s more captivating than ever. But it disappears as quickly as it comes. Some days, I can just hear his voice. We sit and talk. I tell him about my world, trying to get him to come. He just changes the subject.
Tonight, I lay my head down, wondering what awaits me this time, but nothing happens. That’s odd. Maybe if I call out to him, he’ll come. But, it occurs to me, I don’t know what to call him. He’s always, just, been there. Maybe with all the light in my world, I could save him. I call out in the most pleading voice possible. Still, nothing. I sit down, at a loss of what comes next. After what felt like hours, but could have been minutes, the darkness swallowed me. That’s when I became one of them. Only, I was different. I shined brighter than everything. And everything I touched was filled with light. I begin to realize that was his problem. He never made an impact in his world, so the world drowned him out like he didn’t exist till he was gone.
