Ruins of Your "Goddess"

Of course you say I'm the brightest star in your universe when I'm the only one lighting up the sky.

I am your sun, you say
But you forget until you're surrounded by other stars that the sun is mediocre compared to the brightness that some others give.
And so, I lose your attention when I am no longer the brightest thing in the sky.

But the minute that the moon falls and I rise again, you tell me I'm beautiful and wonderful and I'm smart and I'm yours, and even though I know I'm only yours half the time and you're mine even less, I smile and agree.

How do you expect me to respond, when one moment you tell me I'm beautiful, a goddess- your goddess;
but then the next moment you can't seem to remember my name.

 I become just a face in the crowd when there's a crowd to lose me in,
but when there's no one else around you say that you wouldn't notice even if there were, which is a lie, but it's a beautiful one.

And I want so desperately to believe you, that for those few moments when the sun is the only thing visible in the entirety of the sky, and so I'm the only one for you to put your attention on, I allow myself to believe that I'm the only star in the universe, because it is what you have told me.

Then on the day that I burn out, I wonder who will light up your days as diligently as I,
who will have the patience that I do to put up with your I-love-you-I'm-too-busy-I-miss-you-come-chase-me attitude.

I hope that you find someone on the day that I burn out, because I wish you nothing but the best.

However, it doesn't stop me from wishing that when you told me that I would be that star, you were right.
