North Wind in July

Fresh stew on the stove
the green tomatoes sigh
even bees stay home
& spindly spiders hide

Pale ice-creamies shiver
parading on the prom
it's too cold for the water
& all the kids blame Mom

Warm winter woolies nestle
snuggling in their drawer
She didn't think we'd need them
to help our fingers thaw

Pa dons his bravest smile
gives a reassuring wink
& pronounces when it freezes
the sea will be a rink

We could skate out to the island
where the wind blows fair and square
but if the sun defeats the clouds
we might be blinded by the glare

Then trapped by melting waves
with our hols a total shambles
it's best we just drive home
and forget these seaside rambles
