"Common Era" - My Foot !!
The intelligentia, the movers and shakers,
The university professors, the intellectuals,
have conspired to replace the initials that go with a year.
Instead of this being 2016 A.D. (meaning "in the year of our Lord"),
It has become 2016 C.E., meaning "Common Era."
They don't want to admit that Christianity has shaped the Western world.
They want to close their eyes to the role the Church has played.
They dread being reminded that it has been CHRISTIAN scientists (like Isaac Newton)
who made the discoveries, invented the machines,(telescopes) etc that put the West in the drivers seat.
Replacing A.D. with CE - that is their way, these smug intellectuals,
Of showing that they want to bury Christianity, those ungrateful arrogant devils.
In their own little way, they reveal just what they really are: Christ-killers.
This year is 2016 according to the Christian calendar, why?
Because CHRIST was born 2016 years ago, approximately.
That birth is the EVENT that serves as the base line.
If you're willing to keep the Christian calendar,
Why do you insist in stripping it of its character, its identity ??

In place of CE, I'd say EE would make more sense,
EE for "Extraordinary Era," for extraordinary
is what Christ was and always will be !!
Oh, and one more thing, the Christian calendar will NEVER be replaced.
So use "CE" all you want, it isn't going to do you any good.
After Russia takes over the world, followed by Christ's Appearing,
(Which rolls back the Kremlin's victory), even you intellectuals,
Yes, even you with the superior intellect, will gladly use the initials A.D. once again,
the way they used to be used - up until around a hundred years ago.

How long ago was CE introduced? - I recall reading in the early 1990s that Jehovah's Witnesses (who constantly refer to themselves as Christians) used it in their literature in place of AD (eg they stated the Roman's destruction of the Jerusalem temple took place in 70CE, in a second-hand copy of a book called "The Way To Happiness").
Thanx for your interest but I don't have the answer. But due to your question, I will google it - like I should have already done. Then I will edit this reply...I looked it up and William Safire says (NYT 1997) that Lady Katie Magnus in 1881 was the first to use BCE. I'll get over to Wikipedia next time.
