Image for the poem euphonies paler than blue

euphonies paler than blue

did you get up in the middle of the night?
I awoke, & I was alone in our bed. I got up & found you
at your desk with your head down. there was paper &
an uncapped Bic at your side. you were peaceful, so I let
you sleep. you’ll be angry when I tell you I read you poem…

I am tall.
I can burn my fingers on the surface of the sun;
I can soothe them in the glimmering lacquer of the moon.
I can see horizons beyond the nearest horizon.
They stack up like dominoes
Until everything in front of me is behind me.

If my lover stands in my shadow, he is hidden.
He wants me small, so he can stand above me,
To tell me what I can do and where I can go;
To be in another room when he wants to read
And to be there when he wants to make love,
Which is a thing that plunders me
When I am under him.
I cannot be that small.

I can be gone instantly.  perhaps a step or two
And I will be far away.  from you.
