Don't Ring Me, I'm Engaged

Anticipating the coming footsteps
Waiting for dad to finally hit the bed
Okay he’s in, turn the laptop off
Run to the bathroom. Hurry. Hurry.
Fast strokes of a quick brushing
Smile into the mirror to reveal
Gleaming white stones sparkling
I rush back, text you
"I’ll call you soon xxx"
Listen urgently
Waiting for slightest disturbance
Of this silent night
To disappoint all hopes
Ruin, tear, break them apart
But there is none
It is silent
The only noise is the distant sound
Of an engine roaring, coming to life
I still wait
Imagination is going slightly wild
I seem to think there is someone
Waiting at the door
Beckoning me to drop my guard
Then burst in
Catch me in the act
And question me with a thousand questions
Then finally my head comes round
Tells me to stop being stupid
With the house silent
Parents asleep
Siblings asleep
I pick up my phone
My little beauty
My access to you
Without this, I’d have awful nights
We wouldn’t be where we are today
I dial the numbers
The 11 digits
Etched into my memory
Etched onto my heart
I hear the tone
The rhythm
Like a heartbeat
But it’s too slow
Nothing like my heart
Which beats and beats and beats
Faster faster faster
As I’m hear
With this little black box to my ear
About to hear the voice of my beauty
The one
The only
I’ll do this every night
For the rest of my life
Because I love hearing the sweet sounds
The echoes of an angel
“Hello?”
