Slumber

The ebony curtains block the sun
Flutter one and again
Cold blows the wind
A tranquil evening
Once I dozed sleeping
My heart was rapidly beating
Until no more was I sleeping

The calm I do implore
So I may easily explore
The infiltrator within my soul
That goes places I dare not go
Evoke emotions not yet awoke
Swiftly instill a fear I felt not
Betroth my soul to uncertainty
Revoke my right lay peacefully
Slumber
I dare not ask thee
To consume me
You now scare me
I scarcely recognize thee

Ghastly as a grim ghost
Once a token of comfort
Lately misery has taken thee
Thy beauty and benevolence
Turned to arbitrary violence
A woman beheading children
Ask not what I've seen
From this scene, that scene
No picture is clean
An angry cavalcade
A weary guillotine's blade
With no head you wait
For your sake I leap
That ledge which I leapt
I landed and wept
A grisly image appears
To clear I fear to forget
Hitherto my new slumber
Again I drift, still it is somber.
