Prejudice
I would like to sit you down and educate you,
Literate you,
And teach you a thing or two about what is wrong with our society.
Lately it seems like everybody's been acting insane.
Hating each other because of their color,
Killing their brother,
Killing their mother,
Then turning on their father.
People sicken me when they act like this.
Becoming animals as they attack those with a darker hue,
Those who are pale stick up their nose and outcast them and treat them like dirt,
Talk only in slurs to hurt them,
To them it's a blur between black or white.
They don't know the difference between wrong or right.
Prejudice is so disrespectful,
Prejudice is a sickness,
Prejudice is your insolence,
Prejudice is complete arrogance,
Prejudice is ignorance.
Racism,
Colorism,
Tell me is there any reason to behave this way?.
To let an innocent man die by a cop,
To let a woman be beaten on by a group of girls who didn't like her face
Or to even let a man be threatened because of his race.
Racists now in days love to figure out ways on how to put any minority down,
Treat them like they're nothing and think they can do whatever in the hell they want to them.
Undercover supremacists go under the radar as they pretend they accept everyone, but in reality they secretly want to categorize and be little every color.
So good at acting fake might as well give them an Oscar.

While this is true of many people, it is not for everyone. Everyone is capable of displaying prejudice and hate, and not just for color or race. Gays have suffered from serious prejudice and hatred for thousands of years. Religions have been fighting and killing each other forever. I have spent the better part of the last 48 years trying to understand why people hate each other and discriminate against people for being different in one way or another. I have felt it myself and it sickens me most when I have felt prejudice in various ways. Often people of the same color find reasons to let their differences get the best of them. It is as if we need to hate something, so wherever and whoever we are, there is always a difference to find and exploit or kill if "they" won't be controlled. Every individual has the potential to hate and each person is capable of overcoming it, but hatred is easier because there is a system of support within societies that allow that hate to become systemic. When prejudice started in America, we weren't even a country yet and no one from Africa had even set foot in America yet. If I understood how I overcame my own prejudices I would teach it to everyone. I've been writing it in my poetry for 30 years and talking about it for even longer, but the 3 Seeds of prejudice are like grass, you cut it down and it keeps growing back. Martin didn't die in vain because there are people like me. I wish I had his voice and his drive, but it's hard when you have not experienced the adversity of prejudice all your life. It is so much easier to look the other way when the benefits of prejudice are on your side. If only we could overcome fear and greed and pride, there would be no place for hate to hide...

Thank you for taking the time to read this poem and yes you're right prejudice is not souly just for racism, but I wanted to talk about it in this one because people seem to forget that this is the year 2016 not 1950 and assume it's ok to hate other races for whatever stupid and ignorant reason. I also touched on colorism for a bit in here as well.
I wrote this out of anger due to certain instances like the whole boycott on the #oscarswhitesonly thing which really upset me and learning today my idol ( I'm pretty sure if you've checked out my earlier work you can take a wild guess who) is being played by a white man when he is in fact black.
I was really upset and began to think about all of the things that are wrong with our society when it comes to racism and decided to post this. So I appreciate your feedback and again thank you for taking the time to read this but remember I only did this poem for not just my awareness but also for everyone else's awareness of how alive racism and prejudice is.

Very true. People are still in denial of their prejudices. The whole thing with the Oscar's is the perfect example of institutional racism and how the system can't even recognize how the inequality within its ranks leads to the very situation where great performances go completely unrecognized when the jury is all white, or nearly so.
I am already aware they have a white actor playing Michael Jackson. There is no reason for that. Just because MJ's skin tone was lighter in his adult life is not an excuse. If that was a reason, they could simply use make-up or digital effects to accomplish that while still using a black actor. If it's a dance-ability issue, they could use this actor as a body-double for dancing scenes. I'm not sure how many people can convincingly dance like Michael, so I can see where that could be necessary, but they do that in movies for actors all the time.
So much still needs to change, but people like Donald Trump are always waiting in the wings to build a fire of hatred for their own agenda. But we all have to be careful not to generalize while trying to end prejudice...

Yes! Yes! This is so necessary for the present time Rocky. I stand in agreement with you whole heartedly. I am in disbelief still at the notion prevalent that " one is superior to another individual because of race or gender or any other stereotypes. Sitting here and I'm on my fourth time reading it and it hits hard.. The repetition gets that feeling across !! Love love this

Lately with all of the controversy with the oscars having zero diversity in the nominations to the fact that my idol who is a black man is being played by a white man for a upcoming tv comedy movie about him supposedly 'escaping' 911 ( yep that's right a jacked up comedy smh).
And along with a child being gunned down by police because they thought his toy BB gun was an actual gun.
I decided to write about my frustrations with prejudice and how it effects people.
