"Works Righteousness" - the Place of Good Works in the Salvation Process
Preachers love to harp on Paul the Apostle's words in which he seems,
on the surface, to be putting down good works.
He says,Salvation "is the gift of God, not according to works
which we have done, lest any man should boast"(Ephesians 2.8-9).
But any Christian knows there are three phases to Salvation:
Justification, Sanctification, Glorification.
We are Justified thru Christ's blood, His self-sacrifice on the Cross.
Without good works on our part - but on HIS part.
But concerning Sanctification, that's a whole different ball game !!
As we do good, - Godly - works, in which the Spirit dwells,
This fortifies us, our spirit is encouraged/strengthened - ideally.
Why does our doing "good works" supposedly "sanctify" us ?
People naturally need/love pleasure, we naturally prefer
that which is pleasing as opposed to painful, ugly, harmful.
So, if our appetite for (good) pleasure is satisfied by doing good works,
We are spared the "need' or desire for bad forms of pleasure.
During wartime, the soldier are supposed to be fed by the army supply line, OK?
But there are times in which the army is separated from the food wagons, etc.
At which point, the thing to do is what? "LIVE OFF THE LAND."
During the American Civil War, the Northern Army was supplied
by Washington and the northern states, of course.
That's like we are supplied in our spiritual warfare down here on Earth
By what - spiritual things from the "North", from Heaven above.
But at times the Union army "lived off the land" by (I would hope) buying
food from Southern farmers, merchants, and homeowners (rather than just taking it).
Anyway, THAT is what WE do down here on Earth when we get satisfaction
by doing good deeds or suffering for a worthy cause which makes us feel
the Fellowship of suffering [with Christ]" that the Apostle Paul
So eloquently spoke of(Philippians 3.10)....
to be continued.
