APPLES
Five crab apples for squirrels
With half crazed eyes
And unswept leaves in my garden
Car horns squeak on street corners
Honked by time starved mums
Belted kids squeezed into the back
We mind wet stairs underground
We mind the gap
And mind the squeeze of strangers
Now too big to hold his hand
And blazer too small
I squeeze one shoulder gently
Always look for the good in others
I'd like to say to him
Not - have a nice day - at the gate
With half crazed eyes
And unswept leaves in my garden
Car horns squeak on street corners
Honked by time starved mums
Belted kids squeezed into the back
We mind wet stairs underground
We mind the gap
And mind the squeeze of strangers
Now too big to hold his hand
And blazer too small
I squeeze one shoulder gently
Always look for the good in others
I'd like to say to him
Not - have a nice day - at the gate

I wipe away a few tears after reading this poem whale...so much said...what a picture you paint and to finish it off with 'always look for the good in others'...man, that is so much better than saying 'have a nice day'...you're a gem... :)

the things I wish I'd said at the time...
I used to think he'd grown up so quickly,
but that was just a cliche,
I think he grew up just right, despite me...

Tenderness is in the hand of a father who loves. Reminds me of the Fred Roger's quote:
"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me,
'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping."
Thank you for sharing something so intimate.

Love that quote Ahavati - so much crazy news in Europe right now - that means so much

We mind wet stairs underground
We mind the gap
And mind the squeeze of strangers
Love these lines - "mind the gap" is one of those phrases that keeps cropping up...
