Fading

Inside this room again
Pausing to take it all in
Mechanical breaths sounding from within
Chest rise
Chest fall
Legs struggling to carry me to your side
Shaking hands try to hold myself together
Pleading for a miracle
Yearning to cradle your innocence
Quivering lips kiss your frigid hands
Gazing into sedated eyes
Tears falling to the floor
Watching monitors
Following your heartrate with reddened eyes
Prayerfully listening to each tone
Numbers falling
Alarms sounding
Doctors running
Life fading
Heart sinking
Knees giving
Alarms silenced
Doctors reviving
Numbers rising
Life stabilized momentarily
Conversations of the options
You’ve been fighting
Since your first breath
I find my way
Back at your side
Longing to feel you move,
like those nine months before
Before the tubes
Before the medicines
What I would give to take this from you
