The Dawn

[I gazed at the sun moon and stars
from a state prison yard
where my body was hell bound
but my mind escaped far
my eyes see with the knowledge
of the true and living God
but I'm never blind to the reality
of niggas thieves and cons
who couldn't resurrect the dead
if they had a magic wand
but we could build pyramids
if only our word was bond
it took
years to learn
I searched through books
just when they said it was the last place
a black man would look
for knowledge
of the truth there's no excuse
my will is hooked
my soul seeks the straight path
but honestly I'm still a crook
forces of my nature rage like hurricane winds
the devil who made me
is nothing but the evils within
pride envy anger lust fear
the greed of men
my flesh is weak without the Spirit
I'm a slave to sin
and so the jail house doors revolve
I used to call myself god
but it was vanity I never evolved
from savagery to self-mastery
it took several falls
to realize my insanity
and the cause of it all
