I've watched you grow up
a little more each year,
marking your height on
the inside of the doorframe,
but with every day
that goes by,
in my eyes you will still
be my little boy/girl.

I will always remember
that big number one candle
on your first birthday cake,
you were so confused by the flame
and I kissed your forehead
to let you know everything was okay.
