Future Past
When you go the leaves
Will still turn red in autumn
The weather will shift to
Cool nights and mild days
The snow will come in winter
Long icicles hanging from the roof
And piles of white in every
Street and parking lot
Spring will still creep in slowly
Little increments of warming
The trees opening new leaves
As if they expect a surprise
The seasons will pass as they
Always do up here in this
Lonely place full of loud people
And unkind looks
They will pass and I will watch
As I always do for summer’s warmth
But I will watch in vain
You will not be here
And the earth has lost its power
To ever warm me again
Will still turn red in autumn
The weather will shift to
Cool nights and mild days
The snow will come in winter
Long icicles hanging from the roof
And piles of white in every
Street and parking lot
Spring will still creep in slowly
Little increments of warming
The trees opening new leaves
As if they expect a surprise
The seasons will pass as they
Always do up here in this
Lonely place full of loud people
And unkind looks
They will pass and I will watch
As I always do for summer’s warmth
But I will watch in vain
You will not be here
And the earth has lost its power
To ever warm me again
