Parental Advice
I impart my wisdom to you
So that you can
Avoid the life I have led
And the life I now have
Racked with pain and guilt
In equal measure
This life I have
I have now given to you
As inherited genetics
It is my gift to you
My gift of pain and horror
My gift of regret
Of unfulfilled promise
And failed ambition
With great sadness I watch
As you march headlong
Into my nightmare
I have wasted my time
Giving you advice
Trying to turn you
From this path
But society has taught
Self reliance and stupidity
In equal measure
You suffer from PDS
Parental Deafness Syndrome
My only blessing
I will not live long enough
To see you
Become me
I say these things
Out of love
So that I can spare you
So that you can have life
So you can live a life
Worth living
So you can
Love me
The way
I love you

This is a great poem. Could really feel the deep love for sure, but also the sadness and frustration with limitations advice presents. Just because it is given, there is never a guaranty it will be followed... Sometimes people have to learn for themselves but all you can do is hope that somewhere in the back of their mind your words are remembered, and when it's conveyed with love, I think the chance is greater.

This is a piece full of love, and is brutally honest. Very strong, realistic, I love it. We want to spare those we love from the pain we feel cursed with. To be honest, this is a fairly major reason I am still single. I mean, from my side of that whole equation anyway.

I have been married now for over 30 years - had I been on my own I am not sure that I would have survived - you have my utmost respect for flying solo - never an easy path
