Heroes and Snakes
They looked up to the sky from prayer bent knees,
praying,
hoping,
wishing,
yearning,
for a hero to come and save them.
They reached for sanctuary so long,
blindness became their reality.
Naïve, deceived,
they, at that point,
had no way of knowing what came for them wasn't their savior.
A wolf in lions clothing,
a ghoul behind a mask,
a snake, allusively attentive,
in the bare and brittle grass.
It's not that I could blame them, you see,
they fought, and so rightfully so.
I just wish I could have saved them
from the evil they did not know....and they welcomed.
In fairytales they tell you,
to wish and always dream.
They light the bullshit on fire,
condemning us all, or so it would seem.
The truth is there ARE* monsters,
and liars,
all the same.
They just don't always show up as witches,
or dragons,
ready for the slaying.
Be careful what you wish for,
is the moral of the story.
Never let the starlight blind you,
for you'll be lost then to its glory.
The freedom they had sought
was commendable, and just;
But they handed such riches over
to a man they couldn't trust.
Now don't get me wrong,
heroes DO* exist,
just not (always) atop noble steeds.
It's the wishers of these dreams
that are true controllers of said deeds.
Take to your own horizons,
pray to heavens on bent knees,
dreams are golden ambitions
so long as YOU* see they are achieved.
