you make me a cliche

Don’t take me back
we don’t belong here
in a world that revolves
around yesterday’s impossibilities
some things are better left
unsaid

We bare our hearts
like the open words we breathe
will never again be mistaken
and I bite my tongue
and say the words we want to hear
rather than the ones we’d die to speak

Our history is still un-writable
under the weight of too late honesty
though you talk me around in circles
trying to understand the way
I turned my veins to ink
just so I could write your name
in the ether like a promise
neither of us could live up to

So don’t ask me to say I’m sorry
or that I’d take any of it back

I dreamed your dream on the sidewalk
felt your hand in mine
tasted the heartbeat of your kiss
only to open my eyes
onto another sunburnt daydream
my lips laced with the lie
that I didn’t want that life

So don’t take me back
to the places we used to go
we don’t belong in a world that revolves
around yesterday’s impossibilities
some things are better left
unsaid

No one has ever lived up
to the dream of you
