Blackened Light
If life is a rose
Then never let me wilt away,
As I bloom a short while
I’ll be black by the day
On my last summer’s night
As a fall breeze blew by,
My first petal dropped
Greeting fate with a sigh
I look’d upon the moon
As my last source of light
And the mem’ries flooded in
And away like a kite
The smallest petal fell
By the foot of a babe,
Where the mem’ries began
And the sunken footprints stayed
The light was growing shorter
As the footprints grew and aged
They joined another pair now,
Entwined like letters on a page
The darkness grows heavier still
By the lighting of new eyes,
As a mother of two hushes
Her newest babe’s cries
As the light flickers out
And old woman sighs,
“I’ve loved and lived-no regrets,”
The light leaving her eyes
Her stem translucent and frail
As her soul rises to flight,
Only time will remember days, before
She turned black with the night
You bloom only once
So make the most of each hour
For the sun will creep up
And you’ll be dead as a flower
Then never let me wilt away,
As I bloom a short while
I’ll be black by the day
On my last summer’s night
As a fall breeze blew by,
My first petal dropped
Greeting fate with a sigh
I look’d upon the moon
As my last source of light
And the mem’ries flooded in
And away like a kite
The smallest petal fell
By the foot of a babe,
Where the mem’ries began
And the sunken footprints stayed
The light was growing shorter
As the footprints grew and aged
They joined another pair now,
Entwined like letters on a page
The darkness grows heavier still
By the lighting of new eyes,
As a mother of two hushes
Her newest babe’s cries
As the light flickers out
And old woman sighs,
“I’ve loved and lived-no regrets,”
The light leaving her eyes
Her stem translucent and frail
As her soul rises to flight,
Only time will remember days, before
She turned black with the night
You bloom only once
So make the most of each hour
For the sun will creep up
And you’ll be dead as a flower
