all the ways you love (with TheGoddessMinerva)
the way your chin rests on my hair
when you stand behind me wrapping
those strong arms around my waist
we do a little sway, but it's not dancing
the way your beard tickles my forehead
as you plant a barely kiss there
reminding me i am more than just a body
and you do not always need reciprocation
the way the light catches your eyes
when you look at me with that smile
the darkness I keep so deep inside
cowers and quickly subsides
frankly, it's enough just to have you near
to fulfill my deepest needs
a nightlight by the bed of my deepest fear
of missing your sweet company
more often than not i just want you beside me
sharing the same light and air and space
holding your precious hands
as you touch my trembling heart
after tears have stained our sheets
and my darkness has reared its ugly head
you smooth me back into the correct shape
with swirling circles and able hands on my back
the way we fit perfectly into each other's arms
like a tired cliché about deities and puzzle pieces,
or at best a cheesy science joke about natural selection,
or any dusty old philosophy that says we're made for each other.
when I hold you tightly I feel the proof in these theories,
cracked and dented, ancient scars across broken hearts;
fractured pieces somehow fitting as we wrap around each other,
caressing warm light into the shadowy depths of my mind
all the ways you love without touching me
mean more than any late night whiskey driven tumble
even more than the slow tender sunday mornings
that happen between the barely awake kisses and fully aware
all the ways I love before I even touch you
like waves washing against the shore, representing more,
but it’s enough to calm the terror of the boundless sea,
whenever you are next to me, I never want to fall asleep.
