the great divide

when i hold you,
i get an uneasy
feeling inside.
i can tell you've
been thinking about
leaving,
'cause the wall between
us is too high to climb.
did my best to tear
it down,
but it was infallible
by design.
so fall turned to winter,
across this great divide.

tried to figure out what
went wrong,
don't know why we're
still hanging on.
once i held a fire,
in the crest of my palm.
neglected,
it was left in the cold
far to long.
unable to sustain a spark,
the flame was gone.

a wall was built between us,
too high to climb.
in it's presence,
the sun refused to shine.
a total eclipse,
that travels through time.
so fall turned to winter,
across the great divide.
it's cold right now,
but maybe tomorrow the sun
will shine
