Bet You Didn't Expect to Die
Bet you didn't expect to die this morn,
When you finally spoke to your niece.
Her call woke you before your alarm,
But you promised to visit her next week.
Bet you didn't expect to die today.
Not on the pay day before bowling night.
Never thought it'd be the last day,
You got up and put on your favorite tie.
Maybe you would have picked the mocha,
Instead of cutting calories on decaf.
And later on bought your favorite soda,
Instead of that blended wheat-grass.
Surely you wouldn't have left for work,
You'd have spent the evening at home.
And your estranged son might have his quirks,
Perhaps this once, he'd have answered the phone.
Bet you didn't expect to ruin,
Your dad's old Pontiac.
The one he gave you for your fifteenth,
Right before his heart attack.
But you didn't see that light turn red,
You didn't see that little girl who was almost dead,
When that truck just barely missed her head.
You didn't see it coming right at your side,
Because thoughts of your son brought a tear to your eye,
And you were busy wiping wheat-grass out of your tie.
When you finally spoke to your niece.
Her call woke you before your alarm,
But you promised to visit her next week.
Bet you didn't expect to die today.
Not on the pay day before bowling night.
Never thought it'd be the last day,
You got up and put on your favorite tie.
Maybe you would have picked the mocha,
Instead of cutting calories on decaf.
And later on bought your favorite soda,
Instead of that blended wheat-grass.
Surely you wouldn't have left for work,
You'd have spent the evening at home.
