Speak
They say when a baby learns to talk the next thing to teach is 'how to be quiet'
Because children need to be seen and not heard
We teach then to be quiet when adults are speaking
Be quiet when you are being spoken too
Be quiet this is 'grown folks' business
Be stay in a child's place
BE QUIET BE QUIET BE QUIET
But what happens when that little girl becomes an adult?
Shes quiet when her boyfriend yells at her
She says nothing when he throws her to the floor
Her heart is screaming 'save me' but her lips don't move
She's quiet because her words are ammo for the gun that is her 'man'
Her words are fuel that ignites the fire of the beatings
His words following every flame he throws
Until she is left there with third degree burns so deep, no hospital; no burn unit can repair her scars
But you don't hear her because she's quiet
When I have a daughter i'll teach her to speak
Shout any and everything
Shout from the mountain tops
Scream like you life depends on it, because it does
Speak for the ones who's voices are drowned out by the rustling of the waterfall of tears that they cried before you
Yell until you you cannot yell anymore or be a victim of the silence
Silence won't wipe your tears when you cry
Silence will not hold you hand through the fire
Silence is not the shoulder to cry on it is the enemy
Baby don't sucked in the darkest that you want to believe is light
Silence baby, silence is deadly,
Just ask you mother
Speak no or forever hold your piece
Because children need to be seen and not heard
We teach then to be quiet when adults are speaking
Be quiet when you are being spoken too
Be quiet this is 'grown folks' business
Be stay in a child's place
