Don’t shoot

Please don’t shoot me
As this stance we are in
Reflexes past history
When leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Took on the burdens of race
Hoping that it would end one day
Please don’t shoot me
For standing up for what I believe
For not accepting it when
You kill one of my brothers
Just because you wear a badge
Doesn’t mean you are always in the right
That’s like my parents telling me
That a square peg goes through the round hole
But, because it’s my parents, I’m suppose to act
Like I don’t know how it goes
Please don’t shoot me
For having a problem with someone
Who’s supposed to serve and protect
But, in reality, the only thing
Being protected is the right for
That person to serve out their own judgment
When they think there is disrespect
Please don’t shoot me
For wanting to be treated like
A human being
Instead of a piece of meat you
You throw to the dogs
I’m sorry…
Were you expecting me to say
Thank you for
Protecting and serving us
To the animals
I guess I still don’t know my place
Please don’t shoot me
For simply caring that
People be treated fairly
No matter the pigment
If someone does the crime
Let them pay the time
But this
“Shoot first, ask never” concept
Will not work for me
Please don’t shoot me
I just want to talk
I know no story is ever told
With 100% truth
But I believe that every character
Should be able to tell their part
So Please Don’t Shoot Me
I’ve done no harm
I’m not even walking around
With Skittles and ice tea
