An Old Flame

it surprises you
how it's always
been there--
riotous, yet
self-contained
in a little room
all its own,
ruling, though not
conflagrating,
exact all this
time in its
longing pulse
its somehow
regardful protective
heat

as though one day
you fooled yourself
and shut the door open
