The Gift

I knew I'd be one of dozens
of men vying for your affection.
I knew you'd be showered with gifts.
Diamonds, lingerie, flowers.
Those are nice, but they are not you.

I know, to you, I am different from the others.
Our friendship is deeper, stronger.
I knew I could get you something
that would touch your heart.
When you'd look at it you'd think of me, and smile.

The idea came to me so quickly.
It was going to be special.
Custom.
One-of-a-kind.
Like you.

I was so nervous to give it to you.
I started to doubt all of my excitement.
What if you didn't like it?
Or didn't want it?
I knew I was just being irrational.

And when I finally got to give you the gift,
your reaction was everything that I had hoped for.
Your smile abolished my fears.
You told me you loved it,
but I could already tell that you did.

Now if I see you with it,
my heart smiles.
But here's the secret,
that was just a physical representation of your real gift.
My Love.

But I think you know that.
