Fruit Man on the Corner
He has a stand at the corner of my block
Fruits and Vegetables only
24/7
Rain or shine
I call him Fruit Man
There's two of them working 12 hour gigs
Like a nurse's shift in a hospital
But they're not, they are the Fruit Guys
In their country they could have been doctors
Accountants or Lawyers too
At the very least cable TV installers
Here they sell fruit
No complaints from these guys
A milk crate to sit on
Stoic and friendly enough
One box of strawberries or two ?
Fruits and Vegetables only
24/7

Such a great observational piece. Most wouldnt take the to think about how different their past lives might have been.

In a city like New York, there is a story on every corner. I like writing these kinds of poems. Validating the spirit of this thing we call WORK

Corner Fruit Vendors hold the keys to everything.
Selling fruit is one of the tougher life courses out there. I myself am taking my third year in it. A lot of abstract theory and structural practicality go into it. It's a deep exploration into the psychology of the masses, seeing how people see things, how they pick and choose through their lives. It's a battle of presentation and supply, constant attention and devotion, fruit getting ruined and limp by the sun and the elements, people peddling you constantly for a deal, thieving and so on. If you can get through being a fruit vendor without screaming out loud at society and humanity for its finicky pickinesses then you've done well.
Corner Fruit Vendors keep their cool, as firm as any Religious Savior must. If these men were put into public office, the troubles of our nations would be long gone...
Good write, good observation, hit the nail right on...

It one of my favorite poems because it's so slice of life.
He's not the original guy but he's been there for a long time.
Thank you
