But You Didn't

I spilt coffee on your new shirt the day we met,
I thought you'd get mad,
But you didn't.

When I tripped over, hitting the table,
Sending your documents everywhere,
I thought you'd say I was clumsy,
But you didn't.

When I forgot my lunch money on purpose,
Because you wouldn't let me go on a diet,
I thought you'd think I was stupid,
But you didn't.

When it was your birthday,
And I made you a tiny present
That was rubbish because I had no money
I thought you'd laugh at me,
But you didn't.

When I was lying in a hospital bed,
With no family and friends,
I thought you would let me down too,
But you didn't.

When you asked me to marry you,
And my parents disapproved,
I thought you'd give up on me,
But you didn't.

When you came back from the war
I had so many things
I wanted to pay you back
For everything you did,
But you didn't.
