The Calling (winner of Tell Me Fantastical Lies Comp)

Sometimes it has a scratching, hate-filled voice
Eager to pull you into it's trap with its scraping sound
But still you listen
You go to it
You run to it's side, willing to please

Sometimes it has a dreadful, mourning voice
Calling out to anyone who'll listen to its begging
But still you listen
You go to it
You run to it's side, offering to help

Sometimes it has a menacing, angry voice
Pulling and tearing at your skin with promises
But still you listen
You go to it
You run to it's side, to hold its hand

Sometimes it has a frozen voice, causing fear to well up inside
Threatening to pull your limbs apart if you don't succumb to its wills
But still you listen
You go to it
You run to it's freezing side, lapping up the power of presence

Sometimes it has a wailing voice, laced with false calm to lure you
Dancing with you night and day until you can't remember the time
But still you listen
You go to it
You run to it's glistening hide, like a diver searching for the pearl

Sometimes it has a quiet, beckoning voice
Nodding from the left, the right and in-between with bright fake candy
But still you listen
You go to it
You run to it's outstretched hand, grabbing what you cannot hold

Sometimes it has no voice at all, just a thumping in your skull
Smiling within it's dirty walls, luring you with forgotten spells
But still you listen
You go to it
You run to it's side, no matter the cost

Sometimes it whispers through the din to you, melodic
Causing you to trip and fall, slip between the cracks
But still you listen
You go to it
You run every time, you can't resist its call no matter the voice

Sometimes, you'll stop - pause and reflect
Sometimes you'll run no more
Sometimes, the voices will cease to haunt you
Sometimes if you listen you'll know why it's all false
Sometimes you'll remember why that invention, that spark in your imagination
never came into fruition.
