From the Fair to Eternity
She bounced with songs
She sang many times before
Old friends she knew smile
Listening to her voice soar
All sweet innocence in blue pinafore
Smiles given never needing reciprocation
Until one day a meeting at the fair
Made her stumble, never the same again
He was so full of life, and so much hope
A straight arrow, nicest on the block
Chanced on her face and nearly choked
To say beautiful would be a mock
They gazed into each other’s eyes
A smile exchanged, a holding of hands
simple little gestures, they were transported
to a land where all hearts soared
they woo and cherish with their dance
feet on grass, yet light as gossamer
rosy tinted clouds all around
the two young ones fell in love
at the fair, they met always at the fair
happy, never again to feel the same
they met by day and night despair
for apart they could not bear
too young! just too young and foolish
both parents heartily agreed
they wagged their fingers, made postures
threatening to each other and the lovers
kept apart in locked attic rooms
heart breaking they could not bear
out of the window they climbed
and away they went on the greyhound
sometimes they missed their home
in the valley, at the farm
the dull clouds in years out of time
but together they found their home
a little grave with two tombstone
buried just half year apart
here lies Nellie and John
both died at age eighty-eight.
