"Strong"
A coworker, lovely, full of wit and wisdom, but trapped
Reoccurring bruises, swollen cheeks, shadows under eyes
Heavy makeup, unable to hide her being grabbed and slapped
This beautiful lady, beautiful mind, syndrome racked
Never complaining, always blaming herself, none other
'It's my fault, I made him mad,' deductive reasoning whacked
Three years, four, many offer help but all are refused
Heartbreaking to watch, knowing her condition
Desiring to meet him in a dark alley, I could be accused
Eventually, the opportunity presented, more of a whim
She packs a single bag, disappearing into the night
Hailing a cab, an emotional train wreck, leaving him
'Never look back, always ahead,' I encourage her over the phone
Infusing her thoughts with friendship, care and support
Often reinforcing, 'You have friends, you're not alone'
Months pass, we often speak, her condition improves
At times she offers advice, or consoling words in return
Listening, as she finds her voice, my heart and soul moves
She tells me of a man, kind, understanding and sweet
Her tone mellowing with contentment as she speaks
'He is a wonderful man, happy, an inspiration to meet'
Though unspoken, I could only imagine her passion and zeal
Following many years of abuse, neglect, self doubt
Having grown and healed, now bathed in love, genuine, real
Continued hopes and wishes, for this lady and friend so dear
Trusting her physical, emotional and spiritual needs are fulfilled
Knowing she is now strong, self confident, assured and clear
Reoccurring bruises, swollen cheeks, shadows under eyes
Heavy makeup, unable to hide her being grabbed and slapped
This beautiful lady, beautiful mind, syndrome racked
Never complaining, always blaming herself, none other
