What Have You Asked Me

You’re not asking me to live
Just to keep breathing
You’re not asking me to feel
Just to keep being

You’re not asking me to laugh
Just to smile
You’re not promising forever
Just a short while

You’re not asking me to love
Just to keep sharing
You’re not asking me to wonder
Just to keep staring

You’re not asking me to grow
Just to keep moving
You’re not asking me to exceed
Just to keep proving

What, I’m not sure…
What, I don’t know…

And all these seeds that I’ve gathered
All these seeds that I’ve sown
Lay waste at my feet
Lay waste to my home
Sit dead in my chest
As I roam and I roam

I’ll walk the horizons
Both east and west
Stare at the sun
In search for my rest

These fingers glow golden
In the beams of the light
Where they darken my day
And layer my night

I’ll rejoice in the burn
As your voice echoes round,
Reminding me, reminding me
Of my place on the ground

You’re not asking me to listen
Just to obey
You’re not asking me to be steadfast
Just to bend and sway

You’re asking me not to crumble
Just to play my part
You’re asking me not to notice
These shattered pieces of my heart
